EUROGI - AN ORGANISATION TO SUPPORT

EUROGI is the umbrella organisation that represents the European Geographic Information (GI) community. It is an independent, non-governmental, and non-profit organisation.
EUROGI is convinced that good governance, economic and social development, and informed public participation depend upon the availability and widespread use of reliable and spatially-referenced information.
The mission of EUROGI is therefore to maximise the availability and effective use of GI throughout Europe.
To achieve this EUROGI has to be truly representative of the whole industry from information creators, developers and those who add value, and of the end-users of GI. For this reason EUROGI has opened its doors not only to national GI Associations but also to members from Industry, Academic institutions, Public Sector bodies, Not-for-Profit organisations, and interested Individuals.

WHAT DOES EUROGI ACHIEVE?

Through the support and active involvement of its members, EUROGI has a unique role in representing the GI community throughout Europe. The role of EUROGI as the GI Network of Networks is exploited for the benefit of its members:

  • EUROGI gives all the nations of Europe a focal point at which to share information and to make it available to public and private organisations alike. EUROGI is a truly European organization. Its members come from across the whole of EUROPE, European Union, EFTA and Accession Countries.
  • EUROGI raises awareness of the importance of geographic information.
  • EUROGI provides its members with accurate and timely information on European opportunities as well as consolidated views on policies affecting geographic information. It provides professional and balanced advice to those who commission and need European GI.
  • EUROGI improves knowledge-sharing between nations by exchanging experiences and best practices.
  • EUROGI encourages greater use of geographic information in Europe by promoting availability, removing legal and economic constraints, and promoting standards.
  • EUROGI supports GI standards - it collaborates with international standardisation organisations in the GI field.
  • EUROGI improves the exchange of views and understanding between European nations and the European Commission by being a recognised contact point for EC Directorates and other European and international organisations.
  • EUROGI is a lobbyist - through meetings and by correspondence with European Commissioners and Parliamentarians EUROGI's lobbying has an impact on the thinking of politicians and other decision makers in Europe.
  • EUROGI participates in funded pan-European projects – for project proposals to be accepted, those funded by the European Commission and other organisations usually require multinational participation. EUROGI is a valued participant and coordinator of such projects.
  • EUROGI is an expert witness - EUROGI draws on the expertise of its members and brings together specialists.

EUROGI is the:

  • European Forum for GI matters
  • Facilitator for GI-discussions
  • Lobbyist for GI
  • Catalyst for topics of concern to members
  • Supporter of national GI associations
