The goal of the GMES initiative (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) is to establish a coherent, operational, long-term and user-dedicated system that meets the specific information needs for policy-making and research in the field of environment and security. GMES will provide new or enhanced information services for different policy sectors such as environment, agriculture, science, regional development, external relations, security, development cooperation, transport and energy. Its implementation will rely on the available European know-how, observing and information systems, and will require enlargement wherever necessary. Geographic information is an important component.
